Volatile organic compounds are carbon and hydrogen bonded compounds that can easily evaporate at room temperatures and enter the atmosphere under normal conditions as a gas. Paints, paint strippers, air fresheners, inks, stored fuel or other solvents, cleaning supplies, new carpets, cosmetics, dry-cleaned clothing, and vehicle exhaust can contribute to indoor VOC emissions. Health effects vary and can be directly related to levels and duration of exposure. The most common route of exposure to VOC's is through inhalation.

Acuity's methods for sampling VOC's are performed by either "grab" or "time-integrated" sampling, utilizing Summa Canisters or MiniCans. Laboratory analysis is performed by an accredited laboratory. Particulate Sampling and Ultrasound Assessments can also be performed to further establish how these gases and particles are moving from one area to area.
